BIM for Pune Metro's Depot and Car-Shed Construction: A Different Kind of Metro-BIM Work (2026)

Stabling yards and workshop sheds at Pune Metro's depots need large-span steel BIM and MEP coordination skills that station and tunnel BIM content rarely covers.

BIM for Pune Metro's Depot and Car-Shed Construction: A Different Kind of Metro-BIM Work (2026)

Search "Pune Metro BIM" and you'll find dozens of articles about underground tunnels, elevated viaducts and station design. What almost nobody writes about is the depot — the stabling yard, workshop shed and inspection bay complex where trains actually sleep, get washed, and get maintained overnight. Every metro line needs one, they are large, structurally distinctive buildings, and the BIM skills they demand are noticeably different from station or tunnel work. For a civil or structural engineer trying to break into metro-adjacent BIM without competing against the crowd chasing station and tunnel roles, the depot is worth a serious look.

Why Depots Are a Structurally Different Problem

A metro depot is essentially a very long, very wide industrial shed with embedded rail tracks, inspection pits below floor level, overhead travelling cranes for lifting bogies and equipment, and an unusually dense services layer running through the roof trusses — lighting, ventilation, fire suppression, and often an overhead catenary or third-rail power feed extending into the shed. The structural spans involved (often 20–30 metres column-free, to allow multiple stabling lines side by side) push well beyond typical building spans, which means the steel detailing demands are closer to an industrial shed or aircraft hangar than to a typical G+10 residential tower.

The BIM Workflow Specific to Depot Work

Structural steel for the roof trusses and crane gantries is usually detailed in Tekla Structures rather than plain Revit Structure, because fabrication-level connection detail and bolt/weld documentation matter for shop drawings. Revit Structure or Civil 3D handles the RCC substructure — inspection pits, foundations, retaining structures for the stabling yard earthworks. MEP coordination inside the shed is unusually services-heavy for an industrial building: oil-water separators and fuel/lubricant handling systems for the inspection pits, heavy-duty ventilation to clear exhaust and brake dust, fire detection and suppression rated for an enclosed rail environment, and power distribution for the overhead crane runs. Civil 3D also does double duty outside the shed for the stabling yard track geometry, drainage and access-road grading, which interfaces directly with the depot's rail alignment design.

Where This Work Actually Sits in a Metro Project

Depot construction is typically bid and executed as a distinct package from stations and viaducts, often by a general civil/structural contractor working alongside the rolling-stock and signalling contractors rather than purely an AEC-BIM-heavy consultancy. That means the hiring pool is narrower and less crowded than station-BIM roles, but also that the people who get hired tend to be engineers with a genuine structural steel detailing background rather than pure architectural-BIM generalists.

Career Path and Salary Reality

Entry-level Tekla/structural BIM detailers on depot and industrial-shed-type packages in Pune typically see ₹4–7 LPA, moving to ₹8–13 LPA for engineers who can independently coordinate structure-MEP clashes across a large-span shed and manage shop-drawing issue cycles with fabricators. It's a smaller talent pool than station BIM, which in practice means less competition for each opening — useful information if you're choosing where to specialise rather than following the crowd into the most-advertised metro BIM roles.

How to Build Toward This

Start with a strong Revit Structure and Civil 3D foundation, then add Tekla Structures specifically for steel detailing — this combination (rather than Revit alone) is what depot and industrial-shed contractors actually screen for. Civil engineers with a structural steel interest, and mechanical/civil diploma holders comfortable with fabrication drawings, tend to pick this up faster than architecture-BIM specialists moving sideways.

ABC Trainings runs BIM and Revit Structure batches at our Wagholi and Hadapsar centres with pathways into Tekla and Civil 3D add-ons. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 77740 02496 if you want to build toward this less-crowded structural-BIM niche rather than the standard station/tunnel track.
