Pune Metro Phase 2 and TOD Corridors: What the New Approvals Mean for BIM and Infrastructure Careers (2026)

Pune Metro's Phase 2 is no longer just a proposal. The Union Cabinet has approved two elevated extensions — Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B) — totalling 12.75 km across 13 stations, connecting Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi and Wagholi to the existing network. Alongside this, a separate Line 4 connecting Khadakwasla, Hadapsar and Kharadi has been approved and is under survey, while the PCMC-Bhakti Shakti northern extension targets completion by 2027 and the Swargate-Katraj southern leg by 2029. For a BIM student in Wagholi or Hadapsar, this isn't abstract city news — it's a multi-year pipeline of elevated-corridor and station-box modelling work opening up close to home.

What Metro Projects Actually Need From BIM Engineers

Elevated metro corridors involve a specific mix of skills: Civil 3D and Revit for pier, viaduct and station-box geometry; Navisworks-based clash detection between structural, MEP and signalling services inside station boxes; and detailed coordination around utility diversions, since elevated corridors cross dense, already-built-up areas like Kothrud and Kharadi. This is heavier infrastructure-BIM than most residential tower work, and it tends to pay accordingly once an engineer has even one metro-adjacent project on their resume.

Transit-Oriented Development Adds a Second Layer

Alongside the corridors themselves, metro approvals in Pune typically trigger Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) zoning changes around stations — higher FSI, mixed-use redevelopment, and a wave of new commercial and residential construction clustered near station nodes. That's a second, separate pipeline of BIM work: standard building modelling, but concentrated geographically wherever a new station is confirmed, which is useful information if you're choosing which part of the city to target for internships or your first job.

How This Connects to Other Infrastructure Work We've Covered

Metro work sits in the same broader infrastructure-BIM category as the Pune Ring Road and HCMTR project, which we've covered in detail in BIM for the Pune Ring Road and HCMTR project, and shares coordination demands with large aviation builds like the one we discussed in BIM for Pune Airport's terminal expansion. Engineers who build experience across any one of these large public infrastructure projects tend to find the others easier to break into, because the core skill — coordinating a model across multiple disciplines on a live, time-pressured public project — transfers directly.

What to Do If You Want In

Realistically, this means targeting internships or entry roles with the structural and MEP consultancies retained by Maha-Metro's EPC contractors, not Maha-Metro itself, since execution is almost always contracted out. Building familiarity with Civil 3D alongside Revit, and understanding basic utility-diversion documentation, puts a fresher ahead of most other applicants for this kind of work.
