What openBIM and IFC Actually Mean

openBIM is the idea that a building model shouldn't be locked inside one software vendor's file format. IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is the neutral file format that makes this possible — a way to export a Revit model so that a structural engineer using Tekla, an MEP consultant using a different platform, or a client's facility team using a viewer, can all open and read the same building data without owning an Autodesk licence themselves.

Why a Revit File Alone Isn't Enough Anymore

On single-consultant, single-software projects, a .rvt file is all anyone needs. In practice, IFC export quality depends on correctly mapped IFC classes for each Revit category, sensible property set assignments, and checking the exported file in a free IFC viewer before sending it anywhere — because a badly configured export can silently drop geometry or misclassify elements, which is far worse than not exporting at all if nobody catches it.
