Basic walls: the workhorse of every project

A basic wall is a single, layered wall type — brickwork, plaster, insulation and finish stacked as horizontal layers in its structure. You set the total thickness and each layer's material in the Edit Type → Structure dialog, and every instance of that type updates together.
Basic walls cover the vast majority of real work: external masonry, internal partitions and core walls. Because the layers carry materials, they also drive your sections, schedules and quantity take-offs automatically.
Wall structure and layers: where real control lives

Open a wall type and you will see the layer table — function (structure, substrate, thermal, finish), material and thickness for each layer, separated by the core boundary. The core boundary matters because Revit dimensions, joins and room boundaries reference it.
Naming and building a clean library of wall types — for example EW-230 Brick + Plaster or IW-115 Partition — is exactly the kind of standards work Pune AEC firms expect from a BIM modeller.
Stacked walls: different constructions, one element
A stacked wall joins two or more basic wall types vertically into one element — for example a thicker plinth at the base and a thinner wall above. Instead of modelling two walls and aligning them, you define the stack once and Revit keeps them as a single, host-able object for doors and windows.
Stacked walls are common on facades and boundary walls where the construction changes with height, and using them correctly keeps your model tidy and your sections accurate.

Curtain walls: glazing built from grids, mullions and panels
A curtain wall is a different beast: it is a grid of panels held by mullions, used for glazed facades, shopfronts and the glass towers across Hinjewadi and Kharadi. You control it with curtain grids (the divisions), mullions (the frames) and panels (glass or solid infill).
Learning to embed a curtain wall into a normal wall, add doors as panels and tune the grid spacing is a high-value skill, because facade modelling is one of the better-paid BIM niches in Pune.
How walls connect to the rest of your model
Walls host doors and windows, define rooms, generate sections and feed schedules — so the quality of your wall types ripples through the whole project. A messy wall library produces messy documentation; a clean one makes everything downstream faster.
This is why trainers start beginners on walls: master types and layers here, and worksets, schedules and sheets later all make sense.

FAQs
What are the three types of walls in Revit?
Basic walls (single layered constructions), stacked walls (two or more basic walls joined vertically into one element), and curtain walls (glazed systems made of grids, mullions and panels).
What is the difference between a wall type and a wall instance?
A wall type stores shared properties like layer structure and materials; every instance using that type updates when you edit it. Instance properties like length, height and location are unique to each placed wall.
What is the core boundary in a Revit wall?
It is the reference line separating structural core layers from finish layers. Revit uses it for dimensioning, wall joins and room boundary calculations, so setting it correctly matters.
Is learning Revit walls enough to get a BIM job in Pune?
Walls are the foundation, not the finish line. Employers expect walls plus floors, roofs, families, schedules, documentation and coordination. A structured course in Pune builds all of these into one job-ready portfolio.
