ANSYS Workbench Foundation to Expert – Episode 5: CFD Simulation & ANSYS Fluent for Engineers (Updated June 2026)
The AURIC industrial corridor near Sambhajinagar has committed ₹71,343 crore in manufacturing investment and is generating 62,405 jobs — and the design and analysis teams inside every major OEM there need engineers who can simulate fluid behaviour, not just model parts. Episode 5 of our ANSYS Workbench Foundation to Expert series is dedicated to Computational Fluid Dynamics using ANSYS Fluent — the CFD solver used at Bajaj Auto, Bosch, and L&T for thermal management, cooling system optimisation, and exhaust flow analysis. The good news is that CFD skills are still genuinely rare among fresh engineers, and I have seen candidates with Fluent on their resume command ₹2–3 LPA more than those who only know static structural. This episode is where that advantage gets built.
- Episode 5 teaches CFD setup in ANSYS Fluent: geometry prep, boundary conditions, turbulence models, and result post-processing
- CFD/FEA engineers earn ₹4–₹7 LPA fresher in Pune and ₹10–₹20 LPA at senior level
- Key hirers: Bajaj Auto Waluj, Bosch Ranjangaon (A1/A2), L&T Heavy Engineering Pune, KPIT Technologies, Tata Technologies Hinjewadi
- CMYKPY scheme gives Maharashtra students ₹6,000–₹10,000/month during ANSYS training
- ABC Trainings has ANSYS Workbench batches in Pune (Wagholi, Hadapsar), Sambhajinagar (Cidco, Osmanpura), and Sangli
What CFD Is and Why It Has Become a Core Engineering Skill
Computational Fluid Dynamics is the discipline of simulating how fluids — liquids or gases — behave inside or around a component before you ever build a physical prototype. In automotive engineering, CFD answers questions like: does this oil cooler move enough heat away from the engine at peak load? Does the exhaust manifold create back-pressure that hurts power? Is there a hot spot in the battery cooling channel that will cause a thermal runaway? ANSYS Fluent is the industry-standard solver for all of these. Most engineering degree programmes teach theory — they do not teach you to actually run Fluent. That is the gap Episode 5 closes, and it is a gap that hiring managers at Bosch, L&T, and Bajaj explicitly tell us they struggle to fill.

Setting Up a Fluid Flow Project in ANSYS Fluent: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough
In Episode 5 we open a real fluid flow project in ANSYS Workbench, starting from a CAD geometry of a pipe manifold. The workflow follows the Workbench Project Schematic: link a Fluid Flow (Fluent) analysis system, import the geometry, run SpaceClaim for cleanup (removing small fillets and gaps that cause meshing failures), and generate a polyhedral mesh with inflation layers near the walls to capture the boundary layer accurately. We then configure the Fluent solver: choose the pressure-based steady-state solver, select the k-epsilon turbulence model for internal pipe flow, and set fluid material properties for engine coolant at 90°C. The video pauses at each decision point and explains why you are making that choice — not just what buttons to click.

Boundary Conditions, Turbulence Models, and Solver Configuration
Boundary conditions are where most beginners get stuck, so Episode 5 spends real time here. A velocity-inlet condition specifies the flow speed at the inlet — we use 2 m/s for our coolant case. A pressure-outlet condition fixes the gauge pressure at the exit. Wall boundary conditions with a no-slip condition model the solid pipe walls. We also assign a wall heat flux to simulate heat input from an engine block. For turbulence, we discuss why k-epsilon works well for fully developed internal flows, and when you would switch to k-omega SST for flows with separation or adverse pressure gradients. The solver convergence criteria are set to 1×10-4 on all residuals, and we walk through reading the residual monitors to confirm the solution has genuinely converged.

Reading CFD Output: Pressure Contours, Velocity Vectors, and Temperature Plots
Once the solver converges, the real value comes from post-processing the results in Fluent's CFD-Post environment. Episode 5 shows you how to create contour plots of static pressure, velocity magnitude, and temperature — colour-mapped onto surfaces or cross-sectional planes. We create streamline visualisations to identify recirculation zones (dead spots where coolant stagnates), vector plots to show flow direction near the outlet ports, and XY plots of wall temperature along the channel length to find the peak hotspot. The ability to generate and narrate these plots in an interview or a design review is what separates a trained engineer from someone who just pressed Run and hoped for the best.
CFD and Simulation Engineering Jobs Across Pune and Maharashtra
CFD and simulation roles are growing fast across Maharashtra. In Pune: KPIT Technologies Hinjewadi (simulation tools for EV powertrains), Tata Technologies Hinjewadi (multi-physics simulation), Bosch Engineering Centre Ranjangaon (Plots A1/A2, Ranjangaon MIDC), Bajaj Auto R&D Akurdi, and Mahindra Research Valley Pune. In Sambhajinagar: Bajaj Auto Waluj (Plot G-137) has a growing engineering analysis team; Endurance Technologies (E-92 Waluj) uses simulation for casting and thermal analysis; and the Hyosung plant (₹3,000 crore investment, AURIC) is hiring mechanical and analysis engineers. Fresher FEA/CFD engineers earn ₹4–₹6 LPA in Pune and ₹3.5–₹5 LPA in Sambhajinagar. Senior simulation engineers with 6+ years see ₹12–₹22 LPA across the automotive and industrial sectors.
