What most beginners don't realise: the UN settings don't scale the drawing itself, they tell AutoCAD what each drawing unit represents. If you draw a line 100 units long with UN set to mm, that line is 100 mm.

Setting Drawing Limits in AutoCAD (LIM Command)

Type LIM (or LIMITS) and press Enter. AutoCAD asks for the lower-left corner — type 0,0 and Enter. Then it asks for the upper-right corner — type your sheet size, e.g., 100,100 for a 100×100 mm working area (scale up for A4: 297,210 or A3: 420,297). After setting limits, type ZOOM A (Zoom All) to make the limits visible on screen. You can toggle limit checking with LIM > ON to prevent drawing outside your defined area. Trust me, setting limits at the start saves you from accidentally drawing 10 km away from your actual design, which causes viewport and print headaches.

Drafting Settings: Snap, Grid, Polar Tracking & Object Snap in AutoCAD

Open Drafting Settings from the Tools menu or right-click any status bar icon. Under Snap & Grid: X Spacing = Y Spacing = 10 (or your preference). Use Rectangular Snap for 2D work, Isometric Snap only for isometric views. Press F7 to toggle grid on/off, F9 for snap. AutoCAD Line vs Polyline: Key Differences and When to Use Each

The LINE command (shortcut: L) draws individual segments. Each segment is a separate object — click a line in a rectangle drawn with LINE and only that one segment is selected. The POLYLINE command (shortcut: PL) draws connected segments as a single object — click anywhere on a polyline rectangle and the entire shape is selected. This distinction matters for hatching (polyline boundaries are cleaner), for OFFSET, and for exporting to CAM software. To draw a Line: type L, click first point, click second point, press Enter to exit. For Polyline: type PL, click points, type C and Enter to close the shape automatically. The practical rule: use Polyline for closed shapes you'll hatch or offset; use Line for construction geometry and reference lines you'll delete later.

Explode and PEDIT: Converting Between Lines and Polylines

To break a Polyline into individual Line segments, select it and type X (EXPLODE), then press Enter. The polyline becomes separate line segments. You can verify by clicking — only one segment is selected. To do the reverse — join Line segments into a Polyline — type PEDIT, select one line, AutoCAD asks "Do you want to turn it into a polyline?"
