BIM for Pune's Pedestrian Skywalks: What Retrofit, Repurposing and Demolition Assessment Work Involves (2026)

BIM for Pune's Pedestrian Skywalks: What Retrofit, Repurposing and Demolition Assessment Work Involves (2026)

Pune built a number of elevated pedestrian skywalks in the late 2000s and early 2010s, several of which have seen far less footfall than planned and have periodically come up for reassessment — repurposing, retrofit, or in some cases removal. It's not the kind of construction story that makes for an obvious BIM career pitch, but it's a real category of structural engineering work happening in the city, and one this blog hasn't touched on before. We've written separately about Pune's push toward BIM-documented approvals and about scan-to-BIM work using point cloud data, both of which are directly relevant here.

Why Ageing Structures Need Assessment, Not Just New Buildings

A structure built over a decade ago rarely has clean, complete digital records — drawings may be outdated, modified, or missing entirely. Before a municipal body decides whether to retrofit, repurpose or demolish a structure like a skywalk, engineers typically need an accurate as-built model of its current condition: structural members, foundations, load paths and any deterioration. That's a scan-to-BIM problem as much as it is a structural engineering one.

What This Kind of Work Actually Involves

Point cloud capture of the existing structure, conversion into an as-built Revit or Civil 3D model, and structural analysis against current safety and load standards — followed by documentation that supports whatever decision follows, whether that's reinforcement, adaptive reuse, or a planned demolition sequence. It's methodical, unglamorous work, and it rewards the same coordination and documentation discipline that BIM training builds, just applied to an existing structure instead of a new one.

Who Does This Kind of Work in Practice

Structural assessment and retrofit work on municipal infrastructure like this is typically handled by consulting structural engineering firms working directly with PMC or PCMC, sometimes alongside heritage or forensic-engineering specialists for more complex cases. It's a small, specific slice of the market — not a common first job for a fresh BIM graduate, but a real category of civil engineering work that exists alongside new-build construction.

The Broader Point for Students

It's easy to assume BIM training is only useful for greenfield construction — new towers, new IT parks, new highways. Existing-structure assessment, retrofit and adaptive reuse work is a growing category on its own, in Pune and nationally, as the city's older infrastructure ages past its original design life. Scan-to-BIM skills in particular are worth building deliberately if this kind of work interests you, rather than treating them as a footnote to standard new-build Revit training.
