Link CAD vs Import CAD: the key difference
Revit gives you two options. Link CAD keeps the DWG as an external reference that updates when the original changes — ideal for a consultant's drawing you are tracing or coordinating against. Import CAD embeds the geometry permanently into your model.
The professional default is link, not import, because links can be reloaded, managed and removed cleanly. Importing should be reserved for small details you genuinely want baked in. Choosing correctly here is the single biggest factor in keeping your model healthy.
Units and positioning: getting it right the first time
Two settings make or break a CAD insert. Import units must match the DWG — Indian drawings are usually in millimetres, and getting this wrong scales the drawing by a factor of 1000. Positioning should normally be Auto – Origin to Origin so the CAD lines up with the same coordinate system as the rest of your project.
Beginners who skip these end up with drawings that land kilometres away from the model or at the wrong size. Setting units and origin deliberately every time is a habit that separates a careful modeller from a frustrated one.
Layers, visibility and avoiding model bloat
Once linked, a DWG carries all its layers. You can control which layers show through Visibility/Graphics, and you should switch off layers you do not need. Never explode a CAD import in a live model — exploding shatters it into thousands of Revit lines and text that slow the file down and are almost impossible to clean up later.
Keeping CAD on a dedicated workset or limiting it to the views that need it stops a single drawing from dragging down performance for the whole Pune project team.

Using CAD as an underlay to model accurately
The most common workflow is using a linked plan as an underlay to trace walls, grids and columns in Revit. Pin the link so it cannot move accidentally, then model on top of it. Once your Revit geometry is built and verified, you can unload or remove the CAD entirely.
This is how most Pune firms convert legacy AutoCAD projects into BIM. Doing it methodically — link, align, pin, model, remove — is a repeatable skill employers rely on.
Why CAD-to-Revit skills matter in the Pune job market
Pune AEC firms sit on years of AutoCAD drawings, and most BIM work begins by referencing them. An engineer who can bring CAD in cleanly, at the right scale and without bloating the model, saves the whole team from performance headaches and rework.
It is also a frequent interview question. Being able to explain link vs import, units and why you never explode an import instantly signals that you have worked on real projects, not just tutorials.

FAQs
Should I link or import a DWG into Revit?
Link it. A linked CAD file can be reloaded when the original changes and removed cleanly, which keeps your model healthy. Import only small details you deliberately want embedded permanently.
My imported drawing came in at the wrong size — why?
Almost always an import-units mismatch. Indian DWGs are usually in millimetres, so if Revit reads them as metres or inches the drawing is scaled wrongly. Set import units to match the DWG before inserting.
Why should I never explode a CAD import?
Exploding shatters the CAD into thousands of Revit lines and text objects that bloat the file, slow it down and are very hard to clean up. Keep it as a managed link instead.
What positioning option should I use?
For most projects, Auto – Origin to Origin lines the CAD up with your project's coordinate system. Pin the link after placing it so it cannot be moved by accident.
