ANSYS Workbench Essentials for Beginners: Getting Started with FEA Simulation (Updated May 2026)

India's manufacturing sector attracted ₹71,343 crore of investment and created 62,405 jobs at the AURIC industrial zone alone — and every structural, thermal, and fatigue analysis behind those factories, machines, and components runs through simulation software like ANSYS Workbench. What most engineering graduates don't realise is that ANSYS Workbench is not as difficult to start with as it looks. The five-step workflow — Geometry, Mesh, Setup, Solve, Post-process — is consistent across every type of analysis. Once you understand the logic of that workflow, every simulation you will ever run follows the same mental model. This guide is Episode 1 of our ANSYS series: the complete beginners walkthrough, zero to your first FEA result.

TL;DR
  • ANSYS Workbench follows a consistent 5-step workflow for every simulation: Geometry > Mesh > Setup > Solve > Post-process
  • Structural (Static Structural) analysis is the most common starting point for mechanical engineers
  • ANSYS skills can add ₹1–3 LPA to a mechanical engineer's salary at companies like Tata Tech and KPIT
  • ABC Trainings covers ANSYS Workbench as part of the AI Powered Product Design program

Why ANSYS Workbench Is the Standard for Engineering Simulation in India

ANSYS Workbench is the most widely used Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) platform in Indian mechanical and aerospace engineering. Companies like Tata Technologies (Pune), KPIT Technologies (Hinjewadi), Mahindra Engineering Services, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), and Bosch India all use ANSYS for product validation before physical prototyping. The reason: physical testing of a car suspension or a turbine blade is expensive and time-consuming; ANSYS simulation costs a fraction and can be run overnight. India's AURIC corridor alone — with ₹71,343 crore investment — houses manufacturers who require simulation sign-off on every structural component before manufacture. ANSYS certifications (ANSYS Certified Professional, ACP) are increasingly required for design engineer roles at tier-1 automotive suppliers. According to AmbitionBox, a Simulation Engineer in Pune earns ₹4.5–8 LPA at entry level, versus ₹3–4 LPA for a draughtsman without simulation skills.

Navigating the ANSYS Workbench Interface: Project Schematic and Toolbox

When you open ANSYS Workbench, the main window is the Project Schematic — a visual flowchart of your simulation. On the left is the Toolbox containing all available analysis systems: Static Structural, Transient Structural, Steady-State Thermal, Modal, Harmonic Response, Fluid Flow (Fluent), and more. To start a static structural analysis, drag the Static Structural block from the Toolbox onto the Project Schematic. This creates a six-cell workflow: Engineering Data, Geometry, Model, Setup, Solution, and Results. Each cell has a status icon — a question mark means it needs attention, a lightning bolt means it is ready to solve, a green tick means it is complete. The Project Schematic is where you also link multiple analyses — for example, linking a Thermal analysis to a Structural analysis for thermal stress calculations. Spend 20 minutes just exploring the Toolbox so you know what analyses exist before you start building a model.

ANSYS Analysis TypeWhat It SimulatesIndustry Use

Step 1 and 2: Importing Geometry and Setting Up the Mesh

Geometry in ANSYS Workbench is handled by DesignModeler or ANSYS SpaceClaim. For beginners, import existing geometry from SolidWorks, CATIA, or AutoCAD as a STEP or IGES file — this is the fastest path to your first analysis. In DesignModeler: File > Import External Geometry File, browse to your STEP file, Generate. The solid body appears in the model tree. Check for geometry errors (red faces or missing surfaces) using Tools > Check Geometry. Meshing is the process of dividing the geometry into thousands of small elements. In the Mesh branch of the tree: right-click > Insert > Sizing to control element size on specific faces or bodies. For a beginner's static analysis, set Method to Automatic, Element Size to 5 mm (adjust based on part size), and click Generate Mesh. Examine the mesh quality using Mesh Metrics > Orthogonal Quality — values close to 1.0 are best; below 0.1 indicates poor elements that need refinement. A good mesh is the most important factor in simulation accuracy.

Step 3: Applying Boundary Conditions and Loads in Static Structural

In Static Structural analysis, boundary conditions define how the part is held (fixed supports, displacement constraints) and what loads are applied (force, pressure, moment, acceleration). Right-click on Static Structural in the tree > Insert. For a simple bracket bolted to a wall: apply a Fixed Support to the bolt faces (these faces cannot move); apply a Force of 1000 N downward to the loading face. ANSYS applies these conditions at the nodes of your mesh. The order matters: always apply all supports first, then all loads. In the Details panel you can specify the load direction (component or vector) and magnitude. For real-world accuracy, material properties must be set correctly in Engineering Data — steel's Young's Modulus is 200 GPa and Poisson's ratio is 0.3. These numbers come from real material datasheets from suppliers like SAIL (Steel Authority of India). Using wrong material properties gives wrong results regardless of how good your mesh is.

Step 4 and 5: Solving and Post-Processing Your First FEA Result

Click Solve (the lightning bolt icon) to run the FEA calculation. Solve time ranges from seconds for a simple part to hours for large assemblies. Watch the Solution Information worksheet — it shows convergence messages, warnings, and solver log output. After solving, insert result plots: right-click Solution > Insert > Deformation > Total to see how the part deflects under load. Insert > Stress > Equivalent (von Mises) to see where stress is highest. The colour contour plot maps stress values across the geometry — red zones are highest stress, blue is lowest. Compare the maximum von Mises stress to the material's yield strength (for structural steel, yield = 250 MPa). If max stress exceeds yield, the part will plastically deform or fracture in real life. This is the core insight FEA delivers: you see the failure before you build it. Also insert Fatigue > Safety Factor to see how many load cycles the part can survive — critical for automotive and industrial components.

FAQs

Do I need to know SolidWorks or CATIA before learning ANSYS Workbench?

You do not need SolidWorks or CATIA to start ANSYS Workbench. ANSYS can import geometry from any CAD software as a STEP or IGES file. However, knowing a CAD tool makes you much faster at preparing geometry for simulation. ABC Trainings teaches SolidWorks and ANSYS together in the AI Powered Product Design program — ask about the combo package.

What is the difference between FEA and CFD in ANSYS Workbench?

FEA (Finite Element Analysis) in ANSYS is used for structural, thermal, fatigue, and vibration simulations — it analyses solid bodies like brackets, shafts, engine components, and frames. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) using ANSYS Fluent simulates the behaviour of fluids — airflow around a car, coolant through a heat exchanger, combustion in an engine. Both use the same Workbench interface but different physics solvers.

What salary can an ANSYS simulation engineer expect in Pune in 2025?

According to AmbitionBox and Glassdoor India (2025), a CAE/Simulation Engineer in Pune earns ₹4–6 LPA at entry level (0–2 years). With ANSYS certification and 3+ years: ₹7–12 LPA. Companies like Tata Technologies, KPIT, and Mahindra Engineering Services pay at the higher end for candidates with project experience and ANSYS Certified Professional (ACP) credentials.

Does ABC Trainings provide ANSYS certification after the course?

ABC Trainings provides its own course completion certificate, which is NSDC-affiliated and recognised under PMKVY. For the ANSYS Certified Professional (ACP) exam, Workbench covers the required knowledge base and provides practice exams. The ACP is taken directly with ANSYS/Ansys Inc. — our trainers guide students through the exam preparation as part of the advanced module.
