Common Attack Vectors
Unsecured Modbus: zero built-in security, anyone on network reads PLC registers. Default passwords: many PLCs ship with admin/admin. USB devices: Stuxnet virus hit Iranian nuclear via USB. Phishing emails: employees click malicious links. Poorly configured remote access.
Basic Protection
Network segmentation: PLCs on separate network from office PCs. Change default passwords immediately. Encrypt communications with TLS. Disable unused ports and web servers. Regular backups of PLC programs. Physical security for control cabinets.
Is Modbus secure?
No. Basic Modbus has zero security. Never expose directly to internet. Use OPC UA for secure communication.
