Revit LOD Standards Explained: What Pune BIM Employers Actually Mean by LOD 300, 350 or 400 (2026)
Open a job listing for a BIM modeler at a Pune firm and you'll often see a line like "experience delivering models to LOD 350." Most freshers nod along in the interview without actually knowing what that number changes about how they should be modeling. LOD — Level of Development — is one of the most-mentioned, least-explained terms in the entire BIM hiring process.
What LOD Actually Measures
LOD does not describe how detailed a model looks visually. It describes how much you can reliably trust the model's information at each stage — geometry, size, location, and increasingly, non-graphical data like manufacturer and quantity. A wall can look identical on screen at LOD 200 and LOD 400, but at LOD 200 its exact dimensions might still change, while at LOD 400 it should be fabrication-accurate. Employers care about this distinction because it determines what decisions can safely be made from the model.
The Levels Pune Employers Actually Reference
LOD 200 is rough massing and approximate systems, used early in design. LOD 300 is the level most architectural and MEP coordination work in Pune actually runs on — accurate size, shape and location, suitable for coordination and basic quantity takeoff. LOD 350 adds interfaces between systems, meaning your ductwork model has to correctly show how it connects to structure and other services, not just where it sits. LOD 400 is fabrication level, used mainly in steel detailing and MEP shop drawings, where the model has to be precise enough to manufacture from directly.
Why This Trips Up Freshers in Interviews
Most course-taught Revit models are built to look complete without ever being assigned an explicit LOD target, so students genuinely don't know which level their own coursework represents. When an interviewer asks "what LOD do you typically model to," a vague answer signals that a candidate has never worked inside a real BIM execution plan — a document every mid-size Pune firm and every government or PSU project increasingly requires as standard practice.
How to Actually Learn to Work This Way
The fix isn't memorising the definitions — it's practising modeling to a stated LOD target and checking your own output against it, the same way you'd be reviewed on a live project. Courses that assign a BIM Execution Plan (BEP) as part of coursework, even a simplified one, prepare students far better for this than courses that only teach software commands. This connects directly to quantity takeoff work, since accurate BOQ output depends entirely on the model being built to the LOD it claims.
What to Ask Before You Enrol
Ask whether the course ever assigns work against a stated LOD requirement, or grades purely on whether the model "looks right." Our module-by-module curriculum breakdown covers where this fits into the training sequence.
