Should I learn one drive brand or multiple?
Multiple — drive brand is even more fragmented than PLC brand in Indian industry. ABB ACS580/880 are common in process plants. Danfoss VLT in HVAC + pump applications. Siemens SINAMICS G120 in motion + servo. Allen Bradley PowerFlex in American MNCs. Delta in SME. What is the difference between V/F control, sensorless vector, and FOC?
V/F (Volts per Frequency, scalar) is the simplest — voltage scales linearly with frequency, good for fans / pumps / conveyors where speed control is enough. Sensorless vector estimates motor flux from current measurement — better dynamic response, used in cranes / extruders / mixers. FOC (Field Oriented Control) decomposes motor current into flux + torque components for the highest performance — required for servos, hoists, and precision motion. Modern VFDs (ACS880, G120, PowerFlex 755) support all three; you select based on application. We cover the selection criteria + tuning for each.
Do I need this VFD course if I already know basic PLC programming?
Strongly recommended — about 30% of senior PLC JDs in Pune now include drive commissioning as a core skill. Without VFD knowledge, you can program a PLC ladder for "start motor" but cannot independently commission the drive that runs that motor — and on a real plant floor that gap blocks promotion to Senior Automation Engineer. Does this course include servo drives + motion control?
Light coverage — we cover the servo basics (Siemens S120 introduction, Allen Bradley Kinetix overview, electronic gearing concepts) but the full servo / motion control course is a separate specialization. Servo + motion is required for CNC, robotics, packaging machines, and pick-and-place applications. Most engineers take VFD first (more common), then add servo + motion 1–2 years later.
